ACDC’s Modern-day Stoop to Connect Neighbors

Call for Artist—Designing for the Future: Hudson Street Stoop (HSS) Public Art Installation (2026-2028)

Overview

ACDC seeks an artist to co-create a temporary public art installation with community members to activate an open greenspace in Boston’s Chinatown. This installation is planned to be on view from Spring 2026 to Fall 2027 (18–24 months). There is strong preference for applicants who have past partnership(s) with community-based organization(s) as HSS serves as a creative opportunity for residents to practice community self-efficacy. Chinatown residents will select an artist to co-create a temporary public art installation and activate this open greenspace in Boston’s Chinatown. Through this co-creation, residents are both heard and included in the public arts process.

Please read our full HSS Call for Artist packet, which includes the project’s background, process, important details, and more.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a call for public artists to submit their qualifications and letter of interest; artists will NOT need to submit a budget or design proposal at this point.

Current Installation, Dancing Dragon (2023-2025)

On display until 2025, come swing by and explore it while it’s still here!

Rendering of Dancing Dragon by artists Katherine Chin & Parke MacDowell

The 2023 Hudson Street Stoop installation, Dancing Dragons by artists Katherine Chin & Parke MacDowell, was developed in collaboration with Chinatown residents. Dancing Dragon consists of a steel pavilion with meandering canopy structure providing seating, shade, and the armature for community activity. It is inspired by traditional Chinese dragon dance.

The Process

Hudson Street Stoop is advised by a committee of Chinatown residents and local arts administrators. The committee helped ACDC put out a request for qualifications (RFQ) to seek artists experienced in creating public art and engaging with community members as part of the creative process.

Community Visioning Sessions with residents & community members informs each design and selection process. The final selection is by the HSS Committee.

Throughout the year, ACDC facilitates community events that activates the space for the community.
